A Salty Lens: An Interview with Emy from Salty See Photography

When you think of ocean-kissed mornings and golden hour magic, chances are you're picturing a moment Emy has already captured perfectly through her lens. Known for her dreamy portraits of women immersed in nature, Emy
s work is an homage to the ebb and flow of the feminine spirit, as timeless and raw as the sea itself.

In this interview, Emy opens up about her creative process, the power of vulnerability, and her deep connection to the ocean. From her radiant, sunny outlook on life to her inspiring journey as a photographer, Emy shares what fuels her artistry and how she helps women feel confident and radiant in front of the camera.

Lets dive into her world:

  • If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be and why?

Sunny, bubbly and easy-going. It’s really hard to write this about myself haha. I feel like most of the time it feels like I’ve sunbeams shining out of my smile as I go about my day :)

  • Your photos beautifully capture the ocean and women—what draws you to these themes, and what story are you hoping to tell through your lens?

Thank you! I think what draws me to these themes is how femininity and the ocean intertwine so beautifully together. The light, sparkles and colours combined with movement of the female form, it creates such intriguing imagery and allows me to tell stories with elegance and grace of those who I capture with my lens.

  • For women who want to step in front of the camera but feel shy or self-conscious, what’s your number one tip for feeling confident and empowered during a photoshoot?

Sharing with the photographer how you’re feeling. I really love it when women I photograph share how they’re feeling. When they tell me that they’re feeling bit shy, I can then check in with them and ask what would make them feel more at ease, like needing a bit more direction. By sharing how you feel and asking for what you need, you’re empowering yourself to ask for what you need in those moments.

  • You’re clearly someone who thrives in nature. What’s your go-to routine or product for protecting your skin while spending so much time outdoors?

One of the most important things is protecting your skin when we’re water babies. I had a melanoma removed 18 months ago and ever since then, I’ve taken looking after my skin very seriously. I love The Ordinary and Vanessa Megan products for my skin routine at home. I make sure I have products that help repair damage caused by being out in the sun a lot. For when I’m surfing or working, Sol Sista: Butta Block is an absolute game changer with lasting protection and looks beautiful on my skin. I also use Surf Mud mineral sunscreen for my body, which also provides lasting sun protection and doesn’t tend to be slippery which is great for surfing.

  • What advice would you give to aspiring photographers looking to carve their own path while staying authentic to their passions?

Follow the things that you love to shoot and use that to help craft your style. Play, be creative and spend time just photographing what you love. After time, you’ll start to see what things draw your attention, repeating themes in your photographs. Pay attention to those things. Opportunities will start to unfold and paths will present themselves if you follow what excites you to shoot.
