Blog Intro: Meet Jesse — Surfer, Commentator, Conscious Beauty Queen
Britt JamesBlog Intro: Meet Jessie — Surfer, Commentator, Conscious Beauty Queen
We’re beyond excited to welcome Jesse to the Sol Sista Collective crew — an absolute powerhouse of good vibes, big waves, and even bigger dreams. At just 22, she’s already a pro surfer, WSL commentator, Roxy model, and co-founder of her own natural skincare biz. She's also our newest official ambassador — and a total Butta Block™ convert.
In this chat, Jessie shares her story — from sibling rivalry and basketball to surfing the world stage, building beauty brands, and overcoming imposter syndrome. She’s the kind of woman who inspires you to go for it — and look after your skin while you're at it.
Jesse, for those who might not know you yet — tell us a bit about yourself. Who are you, and what do you do?
Oooh this is fun! I’m a 22-year-old professional surfer, commentator for the WSL and co-owner of Mureco and The Good Pick. I’m originally from Narrabeen in Sydney, which is where I fell in love with surfing and kicked off my competitive career. These days I live on the North Coast of NSW — and honestly, it’s my happy place. I spend at least half the year on the road and overseas, surfing and talking about it, so I love coming home to the Northern Rivers to basically do the same thing, haha.
When did you first start surfing — and what was it that pulled you into the ocean life?
I started surfing when I was 11. It was really my older sister Tru and my dad who got me into it. Dad has a strong surfing background, and both my parents always encouraged us to try every sport. My first love was actually basketball — I played all through school and was super dedicated. I wasn’t very interested in surfing at first, but then Tru started and got really good really quickly. The competitive little sister in me thought, “Well if she can do it, I can do it too,” haha. I ended up quitting basketball for surfing, and honestly, it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Haven’t played a game since!
You’ve been doing some incredible commentary work with the WSL — how did that opportunity come about, and do you love being in front of the camera?
If you’d told little me that my job would be commentating for the WSL, I would’ve laughed and said no way! I had terrible stage fright as a kid, so it’s wild that this is now my career. I can’t remember exactly what year it started, but Tru had done a few beach commentary gigs with Shmoo and she kept encouraging me to try it too. As soon as I gave it a go, I was hooked.
I fell in love with being on the mic, seeing competitive surfing from a new perspective, and telling surfers’ stories while helping build their brands. I’ve spent a lot of time with producers learning what goes on behind the scenes so I can do my job well on-camera — there’s a lot that goes into making a broadcast work!
My dad has worked in TV my whole life and he’s taught me everything I know. I truly couldn’t do this without my family. And yes — I absolutely LOVE being in front of the camera, meeting new people and creating new experiences. It’s especially fun when the surfers are your mates — it’s a bloody good time.
You’re also a passionate advocate for conscious beauty, and you’ve started your own natural beauty brand (so epic!) — what inspired that journey?
Yes — Mureco! This skincare journey has been such a ride. It all started because every member of my family had different skin concerns, and we were spending a fortune on chemical-laden products that weren’t even helping. For me it was acne, for Tru it was dry skin, and my parents were dealing with sun damage and ageing.
So we decided to ditch the synthetic stuff and go back to what we’ve always trusted — nature. After a heap of research and development, we created our first product: GLOW. It’s a skin-rejuvenating oil made with Australian organic ingredients that worked for all of us. My skin has never looked better.
From there, we were hooked. Now we’ve got LUNA, a magnesium sleep spray, and ELIXIR, a hair and scalp oil. There’s so much more to come — we’re just getting started!
What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced so far — in surfing, business, or stepping into media and public speaking?
Honestly, I’ve been super lucky to have a solid support system across all areas of my life. Most of my challenges have come from inside my own head.
Imposter syndrome hit me hard when I started commentary — I’d think, “I don’t belong here” or “I’m not ready.” I cried to my dad right before my first CT job because I thought I was going to stuff it up and never get the chance again. But the second I went live, I knew I could do it. I was proud of myself.
I want to show young girls that with hard work, anything’s possible. I’ve built my career through persistence and passion, and I hope I can help pave the way for more women in surf media to do the same.
You've been modelling for Roxy for a while now — how did that partnership come to life, and what does it mean to you to be part of such an iconic brand?
I freaking LOVE being a Roxy girl. It’s been a dream of mine forever, and now I get to call Roxy home. I was sponsored during my junior and QS comp years, and even when I stepped away from competing, Roxy supported my move into media and commentating wholeheartedly.
They’ve backed me every step of the way — I’ve been lucky enough to go on surf trips and be part of campaign shoots with them, which are always such a good time. They feel like family.
This year, I got my first big billboard/poster with Roxy and it was a major dream tick moment. Couldn’t stop smiling for days!
For any girls out there dreaming of carving their own path — in surfing, business, or creative work — what are your top tips or words of advice?
Set a goal — not just any goal, but one you truly love. Something that makes your heart skip a beat. From there, it’s simple: work hard. And I mean really hard.
The path to success isn’t linear. You’ll hit bumps, take sharp corners, and have moments where you want to give up — but trust the process, back yourself, and keep going. You’re capable of so much more than you think.
One quote I always come back to is:
“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”
I hope that hits home for someone reading this.
And we have to sneak this one in… Why do you love our BUTTA BLOCK™ SPF 50+ so much?
Goodness me — Butta Block is just the BEST!!! My skin feels so hydrated and nourished while still being protected from the sun. It doesn’t clog my pores or make me break out — total dream product.
I’m big on sun protection and avoiding damage, and I love that Butta Block uses natural ingredients. It ticks every box for me. It’s actually become the base for my makeup too — so if you see me looking slay on the broadcast, you can thank Sol Sista haha xx
