Sista Talks: Laura from Froth Nugget

Britt James

You know when someone turns their creative spark into something totally unexpected - and it somehow feels like it was always meant to happen? That’s Laura. She’s the artist and ocean-lover behind Froth Nugget, a surf-inspired brand with serious heart and hilarity. What started as a cheeky doodle turned into something much bigger - a way to connect, share the stoke, and make surf culture feel a little more human.

In this chat, Laura shares the story behind her viral stickers, why she’s all about small-batch drops, and how surfing cracked her open in all the best ways.

How did Froth Nugget begin? It honestly kinda started by accident. After a few too many frothies, I doodled this little nugget riding a barrel of fries! We just thought it was funny. My mum’s partner works at a printing place and had some leftover vinyl, so he printed a few stickers for me. I chucked one up on my Instagram and suddenly everyone was asking where they could get one. So I started a page and sold the stickers for a couple bucks. Then people started asking for t-shirts and it all snowballed from there.

Why do you choose to do small-batch releases? It might seem a bit silly. Like, why wouldn’t you want to just sell more? But everything’s so mass-produced these days. I want each piece to feel special. All my art has a story behind it. It’s like wearing a little slice of surf culture, something you connect with. It’s not just another tee everyone has. Art speaks to certain people and I hope that’s what my designs do too.

Your Instagram is so engaging and personal - what do you think has been the biggest driver in growing your following? Probably just being real. I share the ups, the wipeouts, the awkward bits, and all the little funny moments in between. When I started surfing, there wasn’t much out there that felt relatable. It was all pros and coaches. Surfing can be intimidating as hell, especially as a beginner, so I wanted to document my journey and show what it’s really like. The fact that it’s helped other people feel less alone honestly means everything to me.

What’s your favourite board to surf and why? Ooft, definitely my mid-length twinny, the JS Big Baron. I love being able to flow and actually feel the wave, and this board lets me do that. There’s nothing better than that feeling of being properly connected with the wave. It’s like you’re dancing with it.

What’s something you’ve learned along your surf journey that might help other sisters out there? So many things. But the biggest one is that progress isn’t linear, in surfing or in life. Some days feel like you’ve gone ten steps backwards, and that’s totally okay. Not every session will be magic. Just try to have fun, listen to your gut, don’t beat yourself up after a rough surf, and paddle out as often as you can, even when the conditions aren’t perfect. Those are usually the days you learn the most.

Do you take on freelance design work? We love watching your design process unfold — it’s such a vibe. I’ve done a few commissions and it’s definitely something I’m keen to do more of. If the project and the vibe align, I’m all in. I love working with like-minded people and bringing ideas to life.
