Why I Started Sol Sista Collective: A Journey Towards Cleaner Beauty and a Lower Tox Life

It all started in Bali.
An amazing surf holiday... that ended with one of the worst skin reactions of my life.

I had slathered myself in what I thought was a high-quality sunscreen. Instead, within hours, my skin turned angry, red, inflamed, and reactive. I spent most of that trip battling what felt like a full-blown chemical burn across my face — and honestly, it shook me.

That reaction was the wake-up call I didn’t even know I needed.

When I got back home, I started researching. I wanted to know: What exactly had I put on my skin?
And that’s when I fell down the rabbit hole.

What I discovered was shocking.

Many mainstream beauty and sun care products — the very things marketed as “safe” and “gentle” — are packed with ingredients that are far from kind to our bodies. One of the worst offenders? Something called “Fragrance” (or sometimes just labelled as "Parfum").

At first glance, it sounds harmless. But here’s the thing:
Fragrance is basically a legal loophole. It can hide hundreds (yes, hundreds) of undisclosed chemicals — including hormone-disrupting nasties like phthalates.

And because companies can legally label these chemical cocktails as just “fragrance” to protect their “trade secrets,” you and I are kept completely in the dark about what we’re really putting on our skin every single day.

I felt furious. Then, I felt determined.
There had to be a better way — especially for women like me who love spending time outdoors and under the sun, but still care deeply about their health, their skin, and their future.

That’s when Sol Sista Collective was born.
