How to Actually Remove Sunscreen From Your Skin

If you've ever washed your face at the end of a big day outside and still felt like there was a film sitting on your skin — that's not your imagination. It's sunscreen that hasn't actually come off.

Why regular face wash doesn't cut it

Mineral sunscreen works by sitting on top of your skin as a physical barrier that reflects UV rays — that's the whole point of it, and it's exactly why a splash of water and a foaming cleanser often isn't enough to shift it. Water- based cleansers are built to lift water-soluble grime. Mineral SPF is not water-soluble. You end up scrubbing harder, stripping your skin barrier in the process, and still not getting a proper clean.

The balm-to-milk method

This is the method we built Refresha Balm™ around, and it works in three simple stages:

  1. Balm. Massage a small amount of balm into completely dry skin, dry hands. The oils in the balm bind to the oils in your sunscreen and makeup, starting to break them down before water ever touches your face.

  2. Emulsify. Add a small splash of water and keep massaging — this is the moment the balm transforms into a milky texture, which is what actually lifts everything off cleanly.

  3. Rinse. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then follow with your regular routine.

Signs you're not removing SPF properly

  • Skin still feels slightly filmy or tacky after cleansing

  • Congestion or breakouts appearing along the jawline or hairline (common spots where SPF gets missed)

  • A dull, tired look to skin that doesn't lift even after your usual routine

  • Makeup or tint transferring onto a fresh pillowcase or towel the next morning

Do you need to double cleanse?

If you've been wearing mineral SPF all day, yes — a single balm cleanse is often enough on its own, but if you're also wearing makeup on top, a second lighter cleanse afterward ensures everything's fully lifted rather than just moved around.

The takeaway

Wearing SPF every day is one of the best things you can do for your skin — but only if you're actually getting it off properly at the end of the day. A balm-first approach isn't an extra step for the sake of it. It's the step that makes the rest of your routine actually work.

FAQs

Can I use Refresha Balm™ on eye makeup too? Yes - it's gentle enough for the eye area, though we'd suggest a soft touch rather than rubbing directly on the lash line.

Do I need a separate cleanser if I use Refresha Balm™? Not necessarily. For most days, the balm-to-milk method alone is enough. On heavier makeup days, a light second cleanse can help ensure everything's fully lifted.

Is it normal for the balm to feel oily at first? Yes - that's the balm doing its job binding to your SPF and makeup. Once you add water and emulsify, it turns milky and rinses clean.
